Just some thoughts on the islands daily life and some important topics on the Greek islands and Serifos.
WATER
Just some thoughts on important topics on the Greek islands and Serifos the last year.
As everywhere water has become a major concern on the island of Serifos.
To save water on the Greek islands, Both locals and tourists can adopt several practices though to save water.
You can help a lot by limiting water use at your accommodation, by taking shorter showers, and by using water-efficient fixtures.
Also water leaks shall be fixed promptly.
Serifos has a desalination system since 2024 and also tries to harvest rainwater are also being implemented to address water scarcity,
but responsible water consumption remains crucial.
The islands natural waterresources like springs and wells have run dry.
SERIFOS WILDLIFE
When driving, remember, you are on a holiday and no rush needed.
There are so many small animals in Serifos crossing the streets at day and especially at night.
They don't know how fast and dangerous a car is, they are not used to a lot traffic.
And sometimes their way crosses your way... donkeys, goats, sheep...
Hedgehogs (σκαντζόχοιρος) are mostly looking for water and pass the road.
In June/July the small baby-hedgehogs start following their mother...
Same with the partridges (πέρδικα), the littles ones follow the mom crossing roads.
They look really cute when crossing, just like the roadrunner cartoon.
The martens (κουνάβι, a weasel-like mammal) stand in groups at the side of the streets at night.
You can spot them by their glowing eyes (like cats) at night.
Not to forget to mention the island's cats which walk at the harbor promenade,
cross the streets up to Chora and other places suddenly, or the ones have their refuge at Chora's parking,
living up there being fed all year around by locals.
And of course Serifos is home to frogs (chatting away at night), lizards (they can get quite big),
snakes (like the Medusa's hairstyle) and many more.
Once you see all these little creatures on the island, you will understand why they are mentioned here.
